I Went to the Wrong Uni on my First Day

Hi hello hey, it’s been a while & I’m sorry for the absence but I just handed in my last assignment for this year so I thought I’d reflect on my experience of university this year.

I’m lying on my bed in a cream coloured pinafore dress after dying my hair violet from a cheap packet bought from Chemist warehouse. I feel like a kid. Perhaps, I still am. Maybe it’s because I keep escaping back to the Sunny Coast away from my adult responsibilities in the big city. Or maybe it’s because I’m hardly attending university at the moment- being a part-time student gives you that luxury. If you feel like you need to step away from hectic studies to focus on what’s really important than I 10/10 recommend this.

If my first year of university has taught me anything it is that it’s okay to be your kid-like self and pursue what makes your soul feel at its happiest.

Although like Ivy, (Read here: http://www.poisonandice.com/tuesday-talks/what-university-is-really-like) I didn’t expose my bra to an entire lecture room on my first week, I did however end up at the wrong university on the first day.

Hold up, let me try and redeem myself. I had my outfit sorted, my makeup done with a pop of bright lipstick and my tote bag full of the ‘Uni essentials’ (Which I later learnt was not even needed). I’d caught the correct bus but it was actually going the opposite way of my university. I was so focused on making my outfit on point that I had completed misinterpreted the Translink transport app.

Here are some things that I was wrong about:

(1) Dressing Up For Uni

I was completely wrong in thinking that university was a place that you had to dress up for. Some days I hardly even remember to wear a bra or shoes.

(2) Everyone is Stable

I was completely wrong in thinking that those who attended university were the ones who had their lives together.

(3) I Would Never Change Degree’s

I was completely wrong in thinking that I would be content with the first degree I started. Now I can confirm that I was in no way content, as I have now changed degrees three times in one year. I like to think it’s my way of working down my QTAC preference list. Or, you could look at it as indecisive Elly striking again.

A little bit of insight- Whether you’re having a gap year after school, changing degree’s copious times, studying too much or not studying at all, we’re all trying to deal with the crap and once you understand that, it makes university so much more bearable.

So, I’ve learnt that university ain’t what it seems (Hell, you could even miss out on your first day because you’re that stressed out!).

You create the path that is going to make you the most happiest and you follow it all the damn way.

4 Things You Should Never Apologise For In Life

One of the most commonly used phrases we use in life is, “I’m Sorry” and it needs to stop. Unless you are severely hurting someone, you should never apologise for the things which make you most happiest in life.
This post is in collaboration with another incredible blogger – Amy Theodore from The Noise In Wonderland. Amy also recently posted 4 Things You Shouldn’t Apologise for in a Relationship; check it out here.

Spending Time Being Lazy- Amy

It’s important to work hard in life, but it’s equally as important to have some down time. It’s okay to have a super lazy day every now and then where you just do absolutely nothing without saying sorry for it. Binge watch Netflix, eat those snacks you’re craving and don’t go to the gym. Sure life is short and you only live and once so you should cease the day and all that, but sometimes you just don’t have to.

Life Decisions – Elly-Grace

If you’re like me, than it’s always so hard to make a life decision!  More often than not there’s a thousand other people you’ve involved in the decision making process. However, once you have a vision for your life, or purpose, then you should never apologise for it. There is nobody living your life but you. So if you want to quit school for an apprenticeship, do it. You want to leave university to go and pursue your photography? Make it happen. Don’t apologise for it.

Buying Material Things – Amy

There is a lot more to life than the fancy clothes in your wardrobe and the twenty candles you have scattered around your house, but that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to have them. So you want to buy that expensive coat because you’ve been eyeing it off for a year and you’re still in love it with it; DO IT! Maybe Macs are overpriced but your computer has just shit yourself and you think Apple products look pretty, BUY IT! Material things can’t keep your happy for your entire life, but they can bring spurts of joy into your day or week and we all deserve to treat ourselves.

Spending Time Alone – Elly-Grace

We all feel the weight of life getting us down. When you’ve surrounded yourself with too many people and their energy isn’t uplifting you. It’s very important to spend some time alone to regain your thoughts and focus on what’s really important in your life. Get away for a little while- drive to a waterfall, lay in the sun outside, read a book quietly in your room. Do anything to spend some quality time alone and most of all; Don’t Apologise for it!

Top 10 Songs You Need To Listen To Right Now: SPRING EDITION

As you might have seen, spring is well upon us! So check out this post first before you finalise that Spotify playlist for spring because I’ve got the Top 10 Songs you need to listen to RIGHT NOW.

With this new season in place we’re all searching for those addictive beats to hum away to whilst frolicking through some fields or acting melancholic in your bedroom on a Friday night cause you’ve got study to do. **Crying for you** (Wait, I’m that girl in the bedroom on a Friday night, crying, for me and for you. Don’t worry, I’ll cry double for you hehe).

ELLY-GRACE’S TOP 10 FOR SPRING:

  1. Youth – Glass Animals (Similar to Gooey by the same artist but doesn’t stop my love for this band, and the entire album for that matter).
  2. 1000x – Jarryd James ft. Broods. Just pure quality 1000x over.
  3. Two Weeks – FKA Twigs. The other day my friend was like, “Yeah I think this song is about sex” It totally is, you couldn’t even interpret it any other way.
  4. I need a forest fire – James Blake, Bon Iver. Also, Bon Iver recently dropped a few new songs with an album on the way- *fingers crossed*
  5. Lose It – Oh Wonder. It was honestly such a struggle to pick my favourite song from Oh Wonder’s album. I picked this one because it has a sick beat mixed with some jazzy-like tunes…mmm perfect.
  6. You’re the best – Wet
  7. Sex – EDEN. Whilst writing this list my friend messaged me telling me to listen to this song as it was (in her words) ‘Guaranteed to mess with your emotional state’. It definitely did. I’ve now listened to it 5 times in a row and I don’t think I’ll be getting much sleep tonight.
  8. The Girls- Lisa Mitchell
  9. The Birds Pt.1 – The Weeknd. I love this artist so much and always will. He’s just so real arghhhh.
  10. Gabriel – Bear’s Den. I discovered these guys last year randomly with their song Agape. Listen and fall in love.

Enjoy listening to the sounds of spring over the weekend.

Thanks also to Morgan R for the music guidance.

POKEMON NO! CURE YOUR NEED TO ESCAPE

Since I like to think that I am a nice human with the goal to help you all out I want to give you some tips of how you can make your ‘need’ of escape a little easier.

I never joined the bandwagon of Pokemon Go. To be quite honest with you, I never entirely understood it. So I call it Pokemon No for the time being. Maybe it was because I never grew up with the Pokemon obsession.

I grew up with a different form of escape-  the need to fill my life with travelling. This is my means of escape and it’s steamed from a childhood of constant shifting around Queensland. We didn’t even have to move overseas for me to understand that my love for travel was formed from inter-state moves. Eight times to be exact. I don’t mind, it’s allowed me the opportunity to live on the coast, city and countryside. The best of triple worlds.

Don’t be fooled. Escaping is actually a good thing if it is done in moderation. Before too long you must realise that return to reality is inevitable. ** Balling my eyes out crying face emoji. **

6 STEPS TO CURE YOUR NEED OF ESCAPE:

  1. TRAVEL SOMEWHERE NEW in your current city or town. It doesn’t have to be too far away from where you’re living but just go somewhere different. Example: A trip to a park which you’ve never been to before can probably perform a miracle on your mood.  My friend and I are craving another overseas adventure so badly that we randomly spent the afternoon driving around for 3 hours. It was ridiculously pointless but it made us feel like we had accomplished a sense of escapism.
  2. READ A BOOK (ideally the genre of fantasy if you really want a worldly escape). Books are by far the best form of escape when you don’t have the money or the time for an expensive holiday.
  3. TALK TO SOMEONE about their travels. It’s nice to live vicariously through someone. Just don’t get jealous, that will ruin your mood. Be excited for them.
  4. PLAN YOUR NEXT DESTINATION. Most people will tell you that it’s a bad idea to plan your next destination when you just returned from your last. I honestly think there is nothing more healthy than planning your next adventure. If it makes you happy and more motivated to work hard to achieve that next travel goal then why not?
  5. DON’T DWELL ON THE PAST. This is a huge one and very important. Obviously it’s nice to feel nostalgic as you scroll through the Instagram updates of your trip. But you shouldn’t dwell on it for too long because it’s detrimental towards your future goals. Post summer depression is a real thing guys (Coming soon- my article about it HERE).
  6. KEEP BUSY. Immersing yourself into your studies at university, work or even getting an internship are all good ideas to keep yourself busy. Keeping busy both physically and mentally is challenging but it’s worth it.

It’s hard, I understand that. I’m sitting here planning my next trip after only being home for a week. However, if that’s what you need to do to keep sane, then do it. Turn that into motivation to get what you want and explore where you want.
