6 Ways to De-Stress These Holidays

A massive congratulations to all University students for competing another year of being a citizen in stress city !!!

Let’s face it, stress is one of the most common factors in our lives. Although it might not be externally noticed, stress is so sneaky that it happens without us even realising. Internal stress is the type most likely causing those pimples or wrinkle signs. That’s why I’m here, to tell you how it’s possible to de-stress these holidays. Because after all those exams, it becomes pretty difficult.

(2) Read poetry by Lang Leav

(3) Go for a Run

Just don’t do what I did the other day (a.k.a, faint whilst running and getting a random stranger to drive you home). That’s what happens when you have low iron and haven’t exercised for over 4 months. Or when Childish Gambino is playing hectic tunes in your ears and you don’t realise how fast you’re actually running.

(4) Relax in Botica Bliss Bath Tea’s

“Botica Bliss Bath Teas are all about you! Luxurious natural organic ingredients, blended for you to take time out to pamper yourself.”

Botica Bliss is an incredible product! While sipping on a cup of tea I relaxed in their Magnesium bath. I had a divine 1.5 hour bath. Completely forgetting the time! Possibly even falling asleep once or twice.

I love supporting local products and especially those as well crafted and packaged as Botica Bliss.

Affordable, relaxing, and locally made; all three factors in one. A perfect way to de-stress these holidays or even a wonderful gift for someone.

Check out their website here to order: http://www.boticabliss.com/

(Disclaimer: I wasn’t endorsed by Botica Bliss. I just very much enjoyed using their products).

(5) Read some positive quotes

Reading words of affirmation and positive thoughts are also one of the best things in de-stressing my crazy lil mind. You can find some of them on Pinterest, type: Positive Words in the search bar.

I was on the phone to a friend of mine today. We were both in full agreement about the benefits of the ocean. What a glorious yet frightening natural wonder! With the ability to make you float or make you sink.

What a soothing way to de-stress these holidays! Also, swimwear is optional if you find a private beach. Hehe.

Oh, and enjoy your holidays guys!

I Went to the Wrong Uni on my First Day

Hi hello hey, it’s been a while & I’m sorry for the absence but I just handed in my last assignment for this year so I thought I’d reflect on my experience of university this year.

I’m lying on my bed in a cream coloured pinafore dress after dying my hair violet from a cheap packet bought from Chemist warehouse. I feel like a kid. Perhaps, I still am. Maybe it’s because I keep escaping back to the Sunny Coast away from my adult responsibilities in the big city. Or maybe it’s because I’m hardly attending university at the moment- being a part-time student gives you that luxury. If you feel like you need to step away from hectic studies to focus on what’s really important than I 10/10 recommend this.

If my first year of university has taught me anything it is that it’s okay to be your kid-like self and pursue what makes your soul feel at its happiest.

Although like Ivy, (Read here: http://www.poisonandice.com/tuesday-talks/what-university-is-really-like) I didn’t expose my bra to an entire lecture room on my first week, I did however end up at the wrong university on the first day.

Hold up, let me try and redeem myself. I had my outfit sorted, my makeup done with a pop of bright lipstick and my tote bag full of the ‘Uni essentials’ (Which I later learnt was not even needed). I’d caught the correct bus but it was actually going the opposite way of my university. I was so focused on making my outfit on point that I had completed misinterpreted the Translink transport app.

Here are some things that I was wrong about:

(1) Dressing Up For Uni

I was completely wrong in thinking that university was a place that you had to dress up for. Some days I hardly even remember to wear a bra or shoes.

(2) Everyone is Stable

I was completely wrong in thinking that those who attended university were the ones who had their lives together.

(3) I Would Never Change Degree’s

I was completely wrong in thinking that I would be content with the first degree I started. Now I can confirm that I was in no way content, as I have now changed degrees three times in one year. I like to think it’s my way of working down my QTAC preference list. Or, you could look at it as indecisive Elly striking again.

A little bit of insight- Whether you’re having a gap year after school, changing degree’s copious times, studying too much or not studying at all, we’re all trying to deal with the crap and once you understand that, it makes university so much more bearable.

So, I’ve learnt that university ain’t what it seems (Hell, you could even miss out on your first day because you’re that stressed out!).

You create the path that is going to make you the most happiest and you follow it all the damn way.

4 Ways To Understand Yourself Better Than Anyone Ever Will

14389803_10208631725444198_1893431428_n

This morning my Aunty fell into my DM’s (haha had to use that) on Instagram. She had sent me a famous quote from the movie The Wizard of OZ. Even though I actually have never seen more then 15 minutes of that movie (Shocking right!?) I felt that the quote tied in perfectly to what I wanted to write about this morning.

4 Ways To Understand Yourself Better Than Anyone Ever Will

“You always had the power, my dear. You just had to learn it for yourself.”

– The Wizard of OZ

The most powerful thing you can do in life is understand yourself; the potential and power that you possess. Otherwise, you’ll go crazy.

I’ve always thought that 2015 was the biggest year of shaping who I am. However, 2016 has really showed up to be another year of challenges I’ve had to overcome. The hardest challenge of all, understanding myself more. How I react dramatically in certain situations. How in other situations I am reserved and silent.

(1) Understand How Your Mind Works

Ahh the battlefield of the mind….

Do you have a quiet mind, a busy mind or a bit of both? It’s time for you to understand which one you have.

This year I’ve learnt that my loud, chaotic mind doesn’t fit well in a silent household.

Do you feel like you don’t have many views on issues which are consuming our world today? E.g ISIS, Homosexuals and Refugee’s?

Recently I encountered someone talking quite demeaning about homosexuals. I’ve never been witness to a conversation like this in real life and I didn’t quite know how to respond. Usually I would remain silent on this issue, however it made me more irritated than it ever has.

I came away from that conversation excited as I was starting to understand how to think for myself about issues related to all of humanity- a.k.a you & me. I’m beginning to formulate my own perspectives and I’m basing them off love not hate. #spreadlovenothate

(2) Understand Your Emotions

Ever feel down and you’re not entirely sure why? It’s okay, that’s apart of being human.

I visited a friend whilst in the Gold Coast the other night and we had a massive chat about this. It also happened to be ‘R U OKAY?’ week so our conversation seemed fitting. It’s important to recognise your emotions and when you are feeling down about yourself. In those times, you must do something to distract you from that feeling. It’s the only way to pull yourself out of it.

Suggestions: go for a walk around the block, listen to an uplifting song, take a quick break from YOUR social media or watch something funny on YouTube (Recommended: Models falling off catwalks).

With this knowledge, I’m learning the times of the day when I feel most down about life (4-6pm and late at night) and those times that I’m on top of the world (when I’ve left the house or I’m sitting in the sunshine drinking OJ).

(3) Understand Your Purpose

Without purpose we all feel a little, well, stuck. You don’t have to think too far down the track. But if works for you, think about the right nowWhy are you doing what you are doing right now? If the answer is, I don’t know. Then it’s time for you to start understanding your purpose.

(4) Understand Your Soul and Don’t Deny it of Happiness

Most importantly, I am finally realising what is going to make me the most happiest in this crazy world.

I will not deny myself of happiness. Why? Because I deserve it. Just because my path in life might not necessarily be the path that everyone else is taking. THAT’S TOTALLY OKAY.

POKEMON NO! CURE YOUR NEED TO ESCAPE

Since I like to think that I am a nice human with the goal to help you all out I want to give you some tips of how you can make your ‘need’ of escape a little easier.

I never joined the bandwagon of Pokemon Go. To be quite honest with you, I never entirely understood it. So I call it Pokemon No for the time being. Maybe it was because I never grew up with the Pokemon obsession.

I grew up with a different form of escape-  the need to fill my life with travelling. This is my means of escape and it’s steamed from a childhood of constant shifting around Queensland. We didn’t even have to move overseas for me to understand that my love for travel was formed from inter-state moves. Eight times to be exact. I don’t mind, it’s allowed me the opportunity to live on the coast, city and countryside. The best of triple worlds.

Don’t be fooled. Escaping is actually a good thing if it is done in moderation. Before too long you must realise that return to reality is inevitable. ** Balling my eyes out crying face emoji. **

6 STEPS TO CURE YOUR NEED OF ESCAPE:

  1. TRAVEL SOMEWHERE NEW in your current city or town. It doesn’t have to be too far away from where you’re living but just go somewhere different. Example: A trip to a park which you’ve never been to before can probably perform a miracle on your mood.  My friend and I are craving another overseas adventure so badly that we randomly spent the afternoon driving around for 3 hours. It was ridiculously pointless but it made us feel like we had accomplished a sense of escapism.
  2. READ A BOOK (ideally the genre of fantasy if you really want a worldly escape). Books are by far the best form of escape when you don’t have the money or the time for an expensive holiday.
  3. TALK TO SOMEONE about their travels. It’s nice to live vicariously through someone. Just don’t get jealous, that will ruin your mood. Be excited for them.
  4. PLAN YOUR NEXT DESTINATION. Most people will tell you that it’s a bad idea to plan your next destination when you just returned from your last. I honestly think there is nothing more healthy than planning your next adventure. If it makes you happy and more motivated to work hard to achieve that next travel goal then why not?
  5. DON’T DWELL ON THE PAST. This is a huge one and very important. Obviously it’s nice to feel nostalgic as you scroll through the Instagram updates of your trip. But you shouldn’t dwell on it for too long because it’s detrimental towards your future goals. Post summer depression is a real thing guys (Coming soon- my article about it HERE).
  6. KEEP BUSY. Immersing yourself into your studies at university, work or even getting an internship are all good ideas to keep yourself busy. Keeping busy both physically and mentally is challenging but it’s worth it.

It’s hard, I understand that. I’m sitting here planning my next trip after only being home for a week. However, if that’s what you need to do to keep sane, then do it. Turn that into motivation to get what you want and explore where you want.

3 WAYS TO OVERCOME FOMO

3 WAYS TO OVERCOME FOMO

I am a lifelong sufferer of FOMO (fear of missing out).

I finally realised this, thanks to the STA Travel quiz I just submitted.

Living in constant fear that if I miss a party or event I’ll be missing out on something great. Another word to perfectly describe me. Bravo urban dictionary you did well. Not that you haven’t in the past, but still.

Firstly, you must understand what makes you a person suffering with FOMO? Only then will you be able to control the effects it has on your wellbeing.

Three problems/ways to overcome FOMO:

Please note: These examples are really basic. Living with FOMO is so much more complex than that. But does it really have to be?

  • THE PROBLEM?

COMPARING with what others are doing.

Example: The cool group in Grade 10 are all going to Jake’s party this weekend. I’m not friends with any of these people but I don’t want to miss out being apart of their conversations come Monday morning at school.

HOW WILL I FIX IT?

UNDERSTANDING that not everything revolves around that party. The world will continue if you don’t attend. Okay yes, maybe you will miss out on some inside jokes. However, they will most likely only last a week or so, then it will be something new. People move on, and when they do, they move on quickly.

  • THE PROBLEM?

COMPARING with how others live their lives.

Example: She has the new Kylie Jenner lipstick so that makes her prettier than me. I must trial it myself to be as pretty as her.

UNDERSTANDING that your life is just as special as theirs.

  • THE PROBLEM?

OVERCOMMITMENT to events which you know first hand you will not be able to attend.

Example: I already have a coffee date planned with a friend at 10am on Friday. I want to hang out with another friend for a lunch date that same day. I don’t want to miss out on seeing both of them, I can do it.

UNDERSTANDING that it would be worst to cancel on someone the day of the event then to just tell them no from the start. Don’t overcommit yourself. SLOW DOWN.

These are just three common problems of those with FOMO. Cramming so much into your day can ultimately ruin the relationship you have with friends. Most importantly, it can destroy the relationship you have with yourself- causing anxiety and stress 24/7.

REMIND YOURSELF: You’re not missing out on anything. You are living your own life, and that life is pretty damn great.
